Hexion Phenol-Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Adhesives to Receive Highest Heat Resistant Certification from American Lumber Standard Committee

COLUMBUS – (July 30, 2007) – Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc. today
announced that two of its phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) adhesives
systems are currently being certified by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to meet the highest requirements for heat resistance in finger-jointed stud applications per Method A.

AG-5635/LQ-100 and AG-5675/FM-6310L join two Hexion melamine systems in meeting the most rigorous Heat Resistant Adhesive (HRA) standard set by the ALSC.

Because these adhesives have passed test Method A, they are certified for use with any lumber species, grade or finger-joint geometry. Finger-jointed stud manufacturers who specify these adhesives quality for an HRA label without any additional testing.

“As a result of these successful tests, Hexion now offers an entire family of solutions for finger-jointed stud manufacturers who want the HRA Method A stamp for their products,” said David Hemm, Vice President, Performance Adhesives for Hexion. “They can choose from a wider range of adhesives with varying cure speeds, and dark or clear glue lines, that meet the highest heat resistance standards.”

The PRF systems will be the newest members of Hexion’s HexiTherm™ family of high heat-performing adhesives.

The new qualification criteria and labeling system for finger-jointed lumber adhesives resulted from a research program initiated by the ALSC in 2006 which found that certain adhesive chemistries perform better than others in fire-resistance rated assemblies. Testing methods were put in place to qualify adhesives and assemblies that could be certified for multi-family and commercial construction. The Method A test certification is the most stringent for finger-jointed lumber adhesives. Adhesives that pass Method A are certified for unrestricted use.
