Hexion Specialty Chemicals Unveils HexiTherm™ Adhesives for Superior Fire Performance in Engineered Lumber

COLUMBUS – (July 18, 2007) – Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc. today announced the launch of HexiTherm™ high temperature adhesives, the brand name for its family of adhesive technologies designed to offer superior heat performance for today’s engineered wood applications.

Hexion developed HexiTherm adhesives to help manufacturers address concerns about the structural integrity of engineered lumber from firefighters, building code agencies and consumers. HexiTherm adhesives utilize leading-edge thermosetting and emulsion technologies to provide engineered wood materials with structural fire performance equal to solid lumber.

“Engineered lumber outperforms conventional lumber in many ways – in strength, in stability and in ease-of-use, to name just a few,” said Dave Hemm, vice president of performance adhesives for Hexion. “HexiTherm adhesives allow manufacturers and their customers to be sure that when it comes to high heat applications, engineered lumber will also perform like solid sawn lumber.”

HexiTherm adhesives are available for three areas of engineered lumber where fire performance is vital: I-joists and glue laminated lumber, finger-jointed studs and fire-rated doors. In each application, wood products made with HexiTherm adhesives meet or exceed the most stringent testing regimens.

HexiTherm adhesives receive highest heat resistant adhesive rating
for finger-jointed studs

Two HexiTherm melamine-based adhesives have already been certified to meet the highest American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) requirements for heat resistance in finger-jointed stud applications – the first adhesives to meet the most rigorous standards.

Tougher testing and certification of adhesives used in finger-jointed lumber grew out of industry research on fire-rated finger-jointed wall assemblies using many different adhesive chemistries. Studs made with certain non-thermosetting adhesives did not pass standard fire tests. This spurred Hexion to research, develop and test the HexiTherm family of products.

In addition to being certified and labeled as Heat Resistant Adhesives (HRAs) for finger-joint applications, HexiTherm adhesives are also available to meet current heat performance standards for I-beams, glue laminated lumber and fire-rated doors.

“HexiTherm adhesives are another example of Hexion leading the way to assist manufacturers in solving critical industry challenges,” continued Hemm. “HexiTherm Adhesives are just the latest innovation from Hexion, the world’s largest producer of thermoset resins and adhesives for a variety of applications.”
